Marquis Who's Who Honors David E. Garlie as a Top Scientist

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / July 10, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors David E. Garlie as a Top Scientist. Mr. Garlie is the chief technology officer and managing partner of Cross Plains Solutions LLC, a company whose mission is to create products that improve the health, safety and environmental impressions by displacing petroleum chemistries with rapidly renewable and sustainable agriculture biobased supply chains.

About Mr. Garlie

Growing up, Mr. Garlie enjoyed few advantages, which drove him to improve himself through education. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1992 and a master's degree in chemistry from North Dakota State University in 1995. He was heavily influenced by his mentor, Kevin Anderson, to pursue his ambitions. To this day, his determination to succeed drives him forward in both life and competitive situations.

Mr. Garlie's area of expertise is chemistry, which he has used to benefit several industries. He is a member of several organizations supporting the building and construction markets, such as paper and packaging, flooring, non-wovens, and engineered wood and composites.

Mr. Garlie has enjoyed a successful career and is the inventor behind numerous patents and intellectual property. For a significant portion of his working life, he was employed by Cargill Inc. during which time he created one of his most notable patents. Mr. Garlie developed a starch from corn that made the manufacturing of paper and packaging products faster, cheaper and stronger. Another important patent uses soybeans to produce engineered wood and composites products that reduce the use of petroleum binders and adhesives.

Removing Harsh Chemicals

Mr. Garlie's duties at Cross Plains Solutions LLC include supporting a project to replace per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a collection of petroleum chemicals, in kitchenware and firefighting foams.

While firefighting foams containing PFAS are effective in fighting fires, they are also known as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment. These synthetic chemicals are extremely effective and are used in a wide range of products, including nonstick cookware, food packaging and beauty products. PFAS are particularly concerning to firefighters because they build up in the body over time. Notably, studies by the Environmental Protection Agency and National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences have linked PFAS to various illnesses, including cancer.

Creating a Safer Alternative

Mr. Garlie and his team at Cross Plains Solutions LLC have worked diligently to make an alternative firefighting foam that is PFAS-free.

"Right now, we're developing a firefighting foam made from rapidly renewable and sustainable U.S. farmer soybeans, SoyFoamTM, for the 29,000 municipal fire departments across the country. It's the only firefighting foam in the world that's GreenScreen Certified GoldTM. This means it's the safest and most environmentally friendly firefighting foam available today," Mr. Garlie explains.

Making a Difference Through Collaboration

Mr. Garlie and his team have set a goal to eliminate the use of PFAS to protect the environment and reduce the risk to firefighters, first responders, and various communities. They are currently working on a firefighting foam formulation for the Department of Defense, with the goal of deploying it across military bases worldwide. In addition to this work, the team is focusing on developing soy-based firefighting foams for the U.S. Forest Service and the oil and gas market.

Mr. Garlie believes that much can be achieved through collaboration and looks forward to continuing his work.
