A true tale of love, sacrifice, and moral courage set against the backdrop of America’s most turbulent era
In her captivating new book Rebecca’s Soliloquy: A True Civil War Story, author Roberta Nee Adams sheds light on an extraordinary act of compassion that transcended the bitter divide of the Civil War. The novel tells the story of Rebecca Moffatt, a Southern woman who discovers a wounded Union officer on her Tennessee farm. Despite her husband serving as a Confederate officer, Rebecca chooses to nurse the injured soldier back to health, a decision that sets her on a perilous 250-mile journey from Obion County, Tennessee, to St. Louis, Missouri, in a desperate attempt to save her gravely wounded husband held in a Union prison.
What follows is a powerful exploration of love, loss, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Rebecca’s Soliloquy is not merely a historical account, but a testament to compassion in the face of hatred, and a reminder that shared humanity often outweighs divided loyalties.
“As a people, we have many more commonalities than differences,” Adams explains. “On the battlefield, these sides were enemies. But one on one, face to face, it is different. Hate is never the right answer.”
