Outdoor Lighting Concepts, a Houston-area specialist in professional landscape and architectural lighting, is addressing a notable increase in requests for deck and patio illumination as area property owners look to extend the use of their elevated outdoor spaces into the evening hours.
The company reports that homeowners throughout the region are increasingly treating decks, patios, and raised outdoor living areas as year-round gathering spaces rather than seasonal features. Mild Texas evenings, combined with a broader interest in outdoor living, have contributed to steady interest in lighting systems designed to make these areas safe and usable after dark.
In response, Outdoor Lighting Concepts deck lighting projects now account for a growing share of the company's residential installations. These installations commonly incorporate fixtures positioned along stair risers, railings, and seating areas to improve visibility and define the perimeter of raised platforms. Such placement addresses both the functional need for safe movement and the practical goal of making outdoor spaces comfortable to occupy in the evening.
Much of the company's recent work relies on Houston low-voltage lighting systems, which operate at reduced electrical loads compared with standard line-voltage alternatives. Low voltage systems use less electricity and are considered safer to handle, factors that have made them a common choice for exterior applications where fixtures are exposed to weather and foot traffic.
"Decks and patios have become central to how people use their homes, and lighting determines whether those spaces can be enjoyed after sunset," said Mike Hackemack of Outdoor Lighting Concepts. "Property owners are asking for solutions that improve safety on steps and railings while keeping the atmosphere comfortable. Low voltage systems allow for that balance without placing a heavy demand on household energy use."
The company notes that deck and patio projects often extend beyond illumination alone. Many installations are paired with lighting control automation, allowing fixtures to operate on schedules or adjust to different settings for various occasions. In some cases, clients combine lighting with outdoor audio and color-changing systems to create cohesive environments for entertaining.
"The goal is to design a system that fits the way a household actually lives," Hackemack added. "A well-planned deck lighting layout considers traffic patterns, seating arrangements, and the surrounding landscape so that the result feels integrated rather than added on."
Outdoor Lighting Concepts provides rendering services that allow clients to visualize a proposed design before installation begins, along with proactive maintenance intended to support the longevity of installed systems. The company works with both residential and commercial properties, including hotels, restaurants, and parks.
